A successful painter, illustrator, graphic designer and textile artist for the past thirty years, Marit Gretz's fine art explores the secret inner life of nature's harvest. Many of her oversized watercolor paintings present a cornucopia of still-lifes of fruits and vegetables, posed in whole and in dissection, revealing traits, textures and transcendencies overlooked by the everyday eye. Whether viewed individually or in a series, Marit's paintings capture a natural essence, sometimes peaceful, sometimes provocative- preserving the subject in its own space and time for audiences to ponder.
"I have not always known where the art is taking me, but have always welcomed the ride" says Marit. "In my journeys I am constantly bombarded with ideas, images, feelings that tumble through me. To be able to seize these ideas and put them down on surfaces for others to experience is a need I have to fulfill. My passion for realism with a twist of emotion is conveyed through the light, color and radiance that can only be created by watercolors."
Marit's work has been exhibited in collective shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, and has garnered numerous awards. Prior to her interest in watercolors, Marit produced original textile designs in New York City; and has produced numerous commissioned illustrations.
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Marit Gretz is a signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society. She resides in the Washington D.C. area.
